I replaced the stock plastic guards as only after a couple of hundred miles, the heals of my boots were already rubbing on the stock guards.
The AS3 covers are aluminium and are a thinner profile than the plastic ones and therefore are way stronger but also sit closer to the frame of the bike and this prevents the boots from coming into contact with the AS3 guards.
